Cancer: A Closer Look

In 2019 we will be placing our focus on cancer prevention. Cancer is on the rise in North America and 90% of all cancer cases are environmental and therefore is preventable. Want to know how to prevent cancer from taking residence in your body? Stay tuned for the coming awareness blogs about the things you need to do to prevent cancer from staying in your body.

First, we are going to discuss the causes of cancer in the upcoming months. Then, we are going to discuss prevention methods that need to become a lifestyle not a band-aid the rest of the months.

What Cancer [kansər] Is

CANCER IS THE MUTATION OF YOUR DNA CELLS.

For most people when diagnosed with cancer they feel like they have just been handed a death sentence. In most cases this can be true if you don’t have a positive belief system in place, and the information you need to heal yourself and defeat that feeling. Everyone’s body goes through cancer every day. It is up to the state of your body that determines if the cancer stays or goes.

NOUN: A disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body. It is a malignant growth or tumor resulting from the division of abnormal cells.

“He’s got cancer.”

“Smoking is the major cause of lung cancer.”

ORIGIN: Old English, from Latin, ‘crab or creeping ulcer’, translating Greek karkinos, said to have been applied to such tumors because the swollen veins around them resembled the limbs of a crab. Canker was the usual form until the 17th century Compare with Cancer.

MEDICAL CONDITION: Cancer is a disease caused by genetic mutation.  Where cell tissue grows without control. ¢Cancer is a condition where cells in a specific part of the body grow and reproduce uncontrollably. The cancerous cells can invade and destroy surrounding healthy tissue, including organs.

Gene Mutation & What Causes Genes to Mutate?

UNDERSTANDING

In a healthy body, the cell cycle is the natural mechanism that regulates the creation, growth, and death of cells.  It is this mechanism that regulates cell division, allowing the creation of new tissue as older tissue die.  When the normal cell regulators malfunction and cells do not die at the proper rate, there is a failure of apoptosis (programmed cell death) and cell growth goes unchecked.

As a result, cancer begins to develop as cells divide without control, accumulating into a mass of extra tissue called a malignant tumor.  As a tumor grows, it elicits new capillary growth from the surrounding tissue to divert blood and nutrients away from the tissue to feed itself.   Cancer cells also have the ability to leave the original tumor site and travel to other locations and recolonize.

As stated earlier 90% of gene mutation is environmental and, thus, relatively controllable based on what we eat, whether we smoke, if there is exposure to genotoxins or radiation. The most prevalent cause of environmental genetic mutation is the food we eat every day.  A consistent finding in epidemiological studies shows that people who consume the most calories have significantly higher incidences of cancer.

Studies show that there are several mechanisms that explains why overeating causes cancer, but one reason is that more gene mutation occur in response to higher food intake.  Sadly, to say, during the past decade, some of the deadliest cancers are sharply increasing in North America.  Even with the overwhelming volume of cancer prevention data, most consumers fail to take the necessary steps to reduce their own personal risk of getting cancer.
